The President of Unison, Steve North, has been removed from his post and barred from standing for any elected position for 18 months following a lengthy disciplinary process.
Some of our members will remember the President as he chaired some of the sessions at last year’s National Conference where police members were subjected to abusive speeches by some members from the same faction that currently leads the NEC. There were a significant number of complaints made about the Presidential Team at that Conference which were also investigated and upheld in a separate investigation to the outcome below.
This removal of the President from office by a members led disciplinary process was unrelated to the issues that went on at Conference but it is bitterly disappointing to see that some are happy to behave in this way and that there are some who continue to do so and continue to endorse this behaviour.
Thankfully the disciplinary processes were used with members on the panel working together to do the right thing and reach a fair conclusion through due process.
NATIONAL UPDATE
Following the outcome of an internal process under UNISON’s Policy and Procedure for dealing with misconduct by members in relation to UNISON employees, a lay-member panel determined that Steve North is debarred from holding office for 18 months, taking effect yesterday, 28th April 2025. This means he immediately stops being President of UNISON and a member of the NEC, and ceases all other UNISON elected and associated roles.
Julie Mwaluke and Lynn Marie O’Hara will continue to conduct presidential duties as Vice Presidents until a new Presidential team is elected following Unison’s National Delegates Conference in June.
