Happy New Year from Rob Birch, Branch Secretary

Dear Colleagues,

As we begin a new year, we would like to wish you and your families a very happy, healthy, and hopeful New Year.

We are very aware that many of our members enter this year with real concern about the ongoing impact of police funding cuts. Years of underfunding continue to place enormous financial pressure on forces, and too often it is police staff who bear the brunt of those decisions through job losses, vacancies left unfilled, restructures, increased workloads, and growing uncertainty about the future.

Behind every departments budget are real people like you: skilled, committed staff whose roles are essential to effective policing and public safety. UNISON believe that the loss of police staff posts does not simply save money, it weakens services, increases pressure on those who remain, and risks the wellbeing of a workforce already stretched to its limits.

Despite these challenges, UNISON members, working as police staff across Staffordshire, continue to show professionalism, dedication, and resilience. You keep vital services running, often in very difficult circumstances and that commitment does not go unnoticed by your union.

As your Branch Secretary, I want to thank you for your continued support of UNISON. Your membership gives us the collective strength to challenge damaging cuts, to fight for job security and fair treatment, and to make the case both locally and nationally that properly funded policing must include properly valued police staff.

As we enter 2026 your branch officers and representatives are looking at the year ahead and what we all need to do to keep our jobs and terms and conditions secure. You will be aware of the current challenges facing our PCSO members and we want to reassure you that we are doing all we can to support them and to challenge the proposed cuts to their working hours and take home pay. We need to do this not only to protect them, but also to show strength of feeling against any other proposed cuts that impact on police staff members, whatever their role.

In 2026 our branch will continue to:

Challenge funding-driven job losses and detrimental restructures
Defend jobs, pay, and conditions
Support members affected by change, redundancy processes, and increased workloads
Campaign for recognition of the essential contribution police staff make
We know the financial outlook remains uncertain, so we will continue to challenge the decision makers in Government and in our own Force, but most of all UNISON will continue to stand alongside you, supporting, representing, and speaking up for police staff at every opportunity.

Thank you again for everything you do.

We wish you all the very best for the year ahead.

In solidarity,
Rob Birch
Branch Secretary
